- Powweb - Web Hosting at its Worst!
-
- Category: Site Related
- Current Mood: >_< Annoyed
This web site began in the month of December 2004. At that time it was hosted by Bihira, one of the popular web hosting companies discussed at a message board I frequent. After my site went down for more than a week straight due to a server crash with no one to attend to it, I began looking for another web host and came across Powweb.
At first Powweb was great. They provided everything I needed to run this site and were very friendly and great with support. Although that all ended only six months into my hosting plan when Powweb was taken over by another company.
This new company took every site hosted by Powweb and moved them all to another data center that they claimed was better than the one we were all currently on. Well lets just say, all hell broke loose at that point. The cronjobs that will be needed to run the message board I am developing were no longer working. PHP sessions used to log into this blog and the future message boards were also not working and after they disabled my email because I was supposedly using it to send SPAM, I decided it was time to go.
Powweb went from amazing to the worst in record timing. Even support, which is the main reason why I went with Powweb over other hosts, has become unbelievably awful. Below is the quoted conversation I had with Powweb regarding the disabling of my email.
FearKiller:
The PHP mail() function seems to have been disabled for my site. The following is a portion of the script I am using.mail($to, $subject, $message, $headers) or die('Failed to send message');
It returns the message, "Failed to send message" when it is run on the server. This has worked before on both the Legacy and New Platforms and nothing has been altered on the script.
An explanation as to why this is happening and solving the problem would be very well appreciated. Thank you.
Powweb:

Customer SupportFearKiller:
In response to my last ticket. The PHP mail() function does not function properly on any page. In particular....http://www.fearkiller.net/contact.php
Powweb:
Thank you for contacting Support. The e-mail functionality for your account "fearkiller" has been suspended for exceeding our outgoing e-mail limits. In order to maintain tight spam control, we allow our customers to send out no more than 200 e-mails per hour or 2000 e-mails a day using either our CGI servers or Newsletter Manager. In order to remove your account from the mail hold, please get back to us with the following information:
1) Describe in detail your subscription and mailing policies.
2) Verify that opt-out procedures are clearly defined in your mailings and provide us with removal instructions or the best method is to send us the copy of your newsletter in the event of any complaints.Once you get back to us with the requested information we will remove your account from the mail hold and you can send e-mails using our CGI servers or Newsletter Manager.
Please reply to this email with the requested information, so that we can assist you further.
Sincerely,

Customer SupportThe first act of stupidity on Powweb's part was the fact that they absolutely needed to have a link to a page where the mail() function was not working as if it mattered since it didn't function on any page at all. The only current use of email on this site is via the contact page and if anyone is getting spammed with that, it's me. I have taken the necessary security precautions to ensure that the email address those messages are sent to is not able to be changed by any means and I have not received an excessive amount of email at that address at all. If you ask me, it is Powweb's "better and more superior datacenter" that has the problems.
