Compass Dodge in Orange, NJ

If you ever wanted to buy a car, make sure you do not choose this place.

I was browsing AutoTrader.com for a new Mustang convertible. To my surprise, I found one that was everything I wanted, except for the red interior, at a place in NJ called Compass Dodge. I called several times to make sure the car was still available because it would be a week of waiting before I was able to go down to NJ and make the purchase. They said the car would be ready for pickup when I got there if I were to purchase the vehicle.

Before I continue, I'll explain how the advertisement on Auto Trader was laid out. There was only one picture available that showed the car in perfect condition. It was also a 2008 Mustang and it was only 2009 so I figured it probably can't be too badly beat up. They claimed that with a $2,995 down payment on the car, you would be able to get monthly payments of $99! So that was an offer I could not pass up.

So the day finally comes where we make our way to NJ. We arrive at Compass Dodge and enter the building. The first thing I notice is that there isn't any computers at all on anyone's desk nor is there any American car salesmen here. They are all Mexican and Jamaican individuals who can barely speak English. Great start we have here. Next, as we sit down and begin the basic paper work, all of sudden a rap and hip-hop type of music starts blaring from one of the offices.

They began to ask me questions. One being what I would be willing to pay monthly for the car... Umm, hello! I specifically said that I was here because the ad said $99 a month minimum. How about you run my credit before we discuss monthly payments or even better, how about you show me the fucking car! Honestly, they started asking me questions about monthly and down payments before I even saw the car in person.

So now comes time to actually look at the car. The salesmen take us across the street to a dark, dark garage that they have no idea how to turn the lights on. My girlfriend starts to get nervous and I can understand why. It seems as though we're being setup for murder or something.

So they didn't figure the light thing out and they just said here is the car. Right. I'm really going to buy a car I can't see. I started looking at the car, in the dark, and to my surprise I found a large dig in the car along with some large scratches that stretched all the way back from the gas tank opening on the side of the car. Magically, as soon as I noticed that, they were able to find the light switch. Other things I found were the back seat wasn't attached to the car, more scratches on the back of the car, and what looks to be black paint on the red leather interior. That's all I could see at the time because of the car being packed tight between other cars inside the garage.

We asked them if we could test drive the car. They agreed and we waited for them to get the car out of the garage. During the time we waited, we had second thoughts about test driving, but when we told them about our decision, one of the guys started to get loud. We decided to go with the test drive anyway. Not too far though as the car reported it was going to run out of gas within the next 2 miles. The car had a weird sound on start up too.

After the test drive I noticed more scratches on the Mustang door. The door that was displayed in the Auto Trader ad as perfect... The door also did not sit against the car right. Leaving a big opening even when it was shut.

So in the end, we told them to fix it and then give us a call. On our way back home, we stopped at Johnson Ford and purchased a 99% perfect condition 2008 Mustang for only about $2,500 more and it was 100% exactly everything I wanted.

Avoid Compass Dodge.
